It’s not a “must” so much as a routine that helps students begin to identify evidence as they notice different attributes that result in similarities and differences. In a way, it’s helping children learn how to see and to share what they see.
These in particular help kids develop a sense of quantity. I especially like the ones where the quantity is the same, but the configuration or the partners are different. They are developing conservation of number through a fun, visually stimulating activity.
